The sound of brass, woodwinds, and percussion filled Lobo Coliseum on Thursday night as the Longview High School Lobo Band closed out its concert season with a powerful spring performance, one that reflected both a year of preparation and a program recently recognized on the national stage.

The concert, held May 7 at 6:30 p.m., showcased the musicianship, discipline, and artistry that have long defined the Lobo Band program. Students performed a diverse repertoire highlighting both technical precision and musical expression, drawing strong applause from families, alumni, and community supporters in attendance.

The performance comes just weeks after Longview High School earned national recognition for excellence in music education, a distinction that places the campus among elite programs across the country.

“This concert represents months of preparation, commitment, and growth from our students,” said Rhonda Daniel, director of bands at Longview High School.

Under Daniel’s leadership, the Big Green Marching Machine continues one of the most remarkable traditions in Texas high school band history. The program holds an extraordinary streak of 76 consecutive Division I (Superior) ratings at the UIL Region 21 Marching Contest, marking more than seven decades of first-division honors.

Assistant Band Director Grant Woodson said the consistency of excellence stems from culture as much as talent.

“Over the course of this school year, our students have worked tirelessly to ensure that they represent what is right about Longview ISD, Longview High School, and Longview, Texas. Last night’s concert was the culmination of all the hard work they have put in this year, beginning in July,” Woodson said. “We believe we have the best students in Texas, and a huge reason why is their effort, dedication, and commitment to perfecting their craft”.

Last month’s national music education honor further validated the strength of Longview’s band program and fine arts curriculum.

Woodson added that the recognition belongs to every Lobo.

“Being named a NAMM Foundation Best Communities for Music Education recipient is a great honor that demonstrates just how important music education is to Longview High School. From the students to our administration and teachers, there is a shared commitment to ensuring that we develop the best and most well-rounded students possible. Being one of only three schools in Texas to receive this award further demonstrates what Longview High School is willing to do for our students.”

“To receive national recognition for music education excellence is incredibly meaningful,” Daniel said. “It affirms the work our students and directors put in every single day. It also reflects the support from our district, administration, and community, who believe in the power of music education.”

Thursday night’s spring concert served as both a celebration and a reminder: excellence in Longview’s band program is not an isolated achievement; it is sustained through preparation, pride, and performance.
