The future Early Childhood Learning Center begins with a practical goal: more space for young children to learn. Longview Independent School District's new center is planned to include at least 30 classrooms, a library, a kitchen, and a multipurpose room, expanding access to prekindergarten.
"A child's first classroom should open a lifetime of possibilities," said Superintendent Dr. Marla Sheppard.

At approximately 79,000 square feet, the building will bring classrooms and shared spaces into a new setting designed for early childhood education. The library will provide a place for books alongside classroom learning, while the kitchen and multipurpose room will support other parts of the school day.
Construction began in February. By the Aug. 24 Board update, crews were working through foundations and the site improvements needed before the building could rise. Program director Paul Miller said the team was targeting foundation work across six areas by the end of September, with framing to follow in early October.
Those were construction goals reported in August. Completing the building still requires structural work, utilities, interior finishes, and inspections before classrooms can welcome children.
The schedule has also involved a review of a requested extension related to additional stormwater detention design and permitting. A detention area holds runoff temporarily so it can drain in a controlled way. That work is part of preparing the site for the new school, alongside paving and the access required for emergency vehicles.
An opening date has not been announced. A construction schedule does not by itself set the first day of classes in a new building. Existing early childhood classes continue without interruption while the new facility is built.
For families, the value of this project will be measured in the school day it makes possible: a classroom, access to books, and shared places to learn and grow. The visible work is still concrete and site preparation, but its purpose is the children who will eventually walk through the doors.
