Two Longview ISD campuses, Foster Middle School and J.L. Everhart Magnet Elementary, were recognized as 2025 NABSE Demonstration Schools during the 53rd Annual National Alliance of Black School Educators (NABSE) Conference in Chicago.
The campuses received their awards the evening after presenting on nationally noted practices in equity, instructional innovation, leadership, and student achievement. The Demonstration School designation is one of NABSE’s highest honors, reserved for campuses that serve as models for districts across the country.
Superintendent Dr. Marla Sheppard said the recognition reflects the district’s upward trajectory. “This is a proud moment for Longview ISD. Foster and J.L. Everhart continue to show the nation what strong systems, intentional leadership, and an unwavering belief in every student can accomplish,” Sheppard said. “These awards highlight our continued academic rise and reinforce that our work is making a measurable difference.”
Both campuses were recognized for high-impact instruction, inclusive campus culture, strong family engagement, data-driven growth systems, and leadership that empowers students and staff.

Foster Middle School Principal Mary Taylor said the recognition validates years of focused work. “This honor reflects the commitment and grit of our students, staff, and families,” Taylor said. “Foster strives for excellence every day, and being named a Demonstration School shows the nation what our community already knows — our kids can compete and excel at the highest levels.”

J.L. Everhart Magnet Elementary Principal Dr. Crystal Locke said the award showcases what makes the campus special. “We believe every child who walks through our doors is capable of extraordinary growth,” Locke said. “This recognition highlights the heart of Everhart — a school built on purpose, belonging, and high expectations for all learners.”
The NABSE Conference is one of the nation’s leading gatherings, focusing on educational equity, research-based practices, and leadership development. Campuses selected as Demonstration Schools are expected to serve as national exemplars, providing guidance and best practices to other schools seeking improved outcomes.
The dual recognition adds to the district’s growing list of academic achievements and reflects a districtwide focus on instructional excellence and opportunity for every student.
