When Longview High School students return Monday, one of the first Bond 2024 improvements they will experience will be waiting for them at breakfast.
Longview ISD celebrated the newly expanded and renovated Longview High School cafeteria Friday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the completion of more than 4,300 square feet of additional indoor, air-conditioned dining space and café-style seating.
District and campus leaders joined members of the project team and community Friday morning to mark the milestone just days before the beginning of the 2026-27 school year.
“This is what we mean when we talk about making the community's investment visible for students,” said Superintendent Dr. Marla Sheppard. “Our families supported Bond 2024 because they wanted better opportunities and better environments for children. This may be one piece of a much larger program, but for our Longview High School students, it is something they will experience every day. They will walk in Monday and see that progress for themselves.”
The project expands one of the most heavily used student spaces at Longview High School, giving students more room to dine indoors and creating a more modern, comfortable setting for breakfast, lunch and time with classmates.
For Longview High School Principal Shameika Allen, the importance of the improvement goes beyond square footage.
“The cafeteria is one of those places that really belongs to the entire student body,” Allen said. “Students from every grade level and every part of our campus come through this space. Giving them more room, more indoor seating and an environment that feels welcoming makes a difference in their day. I am excited for our students to walk in and see what has changed.”
The renovation is part of the district's Bond 2024 improvement program and has been coordinated alongside other renovation work across the Longview High School campus.
Chief of Facilities and Operations Sam Kington said delivering the cafeteria in time for the start of school required close coordination among district staff, contractors and project partners throughout the summer.
“There has been a tremendous amount of work happening at Longview High School, and the cafeteria has been one of our biggest opening-day priorities,” Kington said. “SCI Construction, E4 Construction, our Facilities team and all of the people involved have had to coordinate schedules, solve problems quickly and keep moving. We’ve added additional serving lines to significantly reduce wait times and ensure a faster experience for students. The goal has been very simple: when students come back Monday, this space needs to work for them.”
The cafeteria project is substantially complete, fully functional, and ready for students as school begins. Final punch list items and finishing touches will continue over the next couple of weeks.
The district's Aug. 4 Bond Oversight Committee update identified the cafeteria as on schedule for the first day of school, with more than 4,300 square feet of new indoor dining and café-style seating ready for breakfast service Aug. 17.
Friday's celebration represents one piece of a much larger construction program now visible throughout Longview ISD.
Five major purpose-built Bond 2024 facilities are currently under construction: a new Career and Technical Education facility, multipurpose center, natatorium, early childhood center and Transportation Center. Together, the five projects represent approximately 331,000 square feet of new purpose-built space.
At Longview High School, construction and renovation work is also reshaping existing spaces across the campus as the district continues implementing Bond 2024 improvements in phases.
“When voters entrust public dollars to us, they should be able to see where those dollars are going,” Sheppard said. “Today is one of those moments. We can cut a ribbon, students can use the space and our community can see another part of the promise becoming real.”
The ribbon cutting followed Longview ISD's annual Staff Convocation at Lobo Coliseum, where employees from across the district gathered to launch the 2026-27 school year.
